The First Biopharma Company to be Purple Certified!

A little over two years ago, the Purple Campaign launched a first-of-its-kind corporate certification program to address workplace harassment in the wake of #MeToo. Starting with a coalition of corporate partners from the tech industry, and together with experts at the Urban Institute and National Sexual Violence Resource Center, we aimed to, as Fortune explained in its profile of the program, tell “job applicants and consumers making purchasing decisions whether or not a company takes harassment seriously,” and “shed some light on the state of the American workplace post-#MeToo.”

Companies across industries now have the opportunity to go through our certification process, which recognizes employers that are taking exemplary steps and implementing best practices in the field when it comes to addressing workplace harassment.

I’m excited to announce that Gilead Sciences is the first biopharmaceutical company to become Purple Certified!

Gilead is a research-based biopharmaceutical company at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19, and we’ve been honored to call them a corporate partner since 2020. To become certified, Gilead provided us with detailed information about its corporate policies and practices for review. Our team assessed the materials Gilead provided and graded them using a scorecard with objective criteria — awarding the company a perfect score of 100 and the designation of Purple Certification

As Robb McFadden, Gilead’s Executive Director for Employee Relations, explained in his announcement,

Gilead’s recognition as a Purple-certified company signals to employees and candidates alike that we are committed to maintaining a fair, safe, and inclusive workplace, and have policies and procedures to address situations when these expectations are not met. And while we are proud of this achievement, we also recognize that this is a journey–not a destination. We look forward to leveraging our partnership with the Purple Campaign as a way of ensuring that Gilead continues to be a great place to work, where all employees are treated fairly and feel like they belong.

I am pleased that Gilead has joined our growing list of certified companies, and I welcome their continued commitment to building better workplaces for all employees.
